Activated alumina is a porous, solid form of aluminum oxide. Activated alumina
is widely used as a desiccant. It is used for a wide range of adsorbent and catalyst
applications including the adsorption of catalysts in polyethylene production. It
is also used in the Claus process, a desulfurizing treatment for natural gas.
Activated alumina finds use in water purification in industrial applications,
municipal water treatment facilities and for home use. It is excellent at

2022-2027. Activated alumina is a high-surface-area, highly porous form of aluminum
oxide. Activated alumina utilizes the principle of adsorption and can be
regenerated by heating it strongly at temperatures between 300-400 C. It is used in industries as an adsorbent to remove impurities
from gases and liquids and to polish effluent for meeting stringent discharge
standards. Many process gases are also commonly dehydrated with activated
alumina desiccant. These include nitrogen, hydrogen, natural gas and carbon

Growing Emphasis on Environmental Cleanup
Chemical spills are the uncontrolled release of a hazardous
chemical, either as a solid, liquid or gas. Spills can kill wildlife, destroy
habitat and contaminate waterbodies. Sites, where toxic spills take place, need
to be carefully managed through containment or cleanup to prevent hazardous
materials from damaging ecological systems. Contaminated sites are of concern

Lithium and its compounds are widely used in glass, ceramics,

The
major obstacle in the Activated Alumina Market is the availability of
alternatives such as activated carbon, activated charcoal and zeolite. Activated
carbon is used to remove certain chemicals or contaminants from water. It is

and carbon. However, chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and chlorine have
poor adsorption by activated carbon. A synthetic zeolite sieve is used to dry

reactions involving organic molecules. Synthetic zeolite unlike activated
alumina performs better in high temperatures and low relative humidity
environments. The adsorption capacity decreases with increasing temperatures,
but zeolites keep their efficiency for drying up to 100°C, whereas alumina has
its more favorable adsorption characteristics below 50°C. A desiccant is a
hygroscopic substance that induces a state of dryness around its surrounding
environment. The most commonly used desiccants, apart from activated alumina, in
the industry are silica gel, activated charcoal and zeolite. These alternatives
